A distinctive and innovative approach to sustainable architecture, this cluster of four domes made for a private island resort in the Maldives, showcases a blend of natural materials and modern engineering.  Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource with a low environmental footprint, and its use in conjunction with durable steel ensures the longevity and resilience of the structure.
The central and tallest dome in this project reaches a height of 16 meters, creating a striking visual focal point. Each dome is constructed primarily from borax-treated bamboo, known for its durability and sustainability. This bamboo forms the main structural element of the domes.
The domes' arched rafters are crafted from bundles of Thyrsostachys, a type of bamboo known for its strength and flexibility. These rafters curve gracefully to support the domes' shape. Complementing these are trusses made from struts of Dendrocalamus, another bamboo species, which provide additional support and stability. These trusses connect the large-diameter tubular steel frames to the concrete pillars, creating a robust and secure foundation for the domes.
The roof of each dome features a unique three-layer composite design. The innermost layer consists of Dendrocalamus skin, providing a natural and aesthetically pleasing finish. Above this lies a vinyl membrane, ensuring waterproofing and weather resistance. The outermost layer is made from coconut fronds, adding a traditional and eco-friendly touch to the design. This layering not only enhances the domes' sustainability but also complements their natural aesthetics, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
The use of natural bamboo alongside steel creates a visually appealing contrast, blending industrial and natural elements. This design is particularly fitting in the resort where the integration of modern technology with natural beauty is desired. The use of bamboo, a traditional building material in island culture, adds a cultural depth to the structure. This, combined with the modern steel framework, creates a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, resonating with both historical and contemporary architectural practices.
These domes represent a unique fusion of materials and design philosophies, embodying the blend of traditional and modern, natural and industrial, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically captivating, with a strong commitment to sustainability.
